Is Mouthwash Necessary?

When it comes to your oral health there are many products out there to help keep your teeth clean and free of plaque and other disease-causing issues. One product that you may wonder about whether or not you should use is mouthwash. Is mouthwash necessary part of your daily oral care?

Is Mouthwash Necessary?

The short answer is that if you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day, mouthwash is not really necessary. However, if you really hate flossing and do not do it and you skip brushing your teeth sometimes, using mouthwash can be a positive addition to your oral care.

Brushing & Flossing

Brushing and flossing your teeth are essential for removing plaque from your mouth. Plaque forms on your teeth during the day. It is made up of bacteria and can cause many different issues in your teeth and your gums. Floss is the only thing that has been designed to get between your teeth in order to remove the plaque from these tight spaces. A toothbrush will loosen up plaque from the surface of the teeth so that it can then be rinsed away. If you do not brush and floss each day, plaque is building up on the teeth and will damage them.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash can help to prevent gum disease and fight cavities. Antibacterial mouthwashes help to kill bacteria found inside the mouth. It is important to know that mouthwash does not rinse any plaque away or even remove it from the teeth. It is simply used as a tool to kill the bacteria that may cause gum disease. This is why it is important to make sure that you are brushing and flossing as well. Consider mouthwash as an additional step for healthy teeth, but not as a replacement for proper flossing and brushing.

Dear Valued Patient

Happy 2024! All of us at Regency Dental hope your year is off to a great start. As many of you have already witnessed, there are changes occurring within our practice for the past several months. Dr. Spanel is in a time of transition within the practice, and he has found a colleague who shares his core values, philosophy, and sense of personalized quality care. He was fortunate to find Dr. Dan Ellingson who is a wonderful, gentle dentist. Dr. Ellingson is a local graduate of Gross High School, UNO, and UNMC College of Dentistry. He has a strong commitment to our local community. Having this opportunity to own a private practice, Dr. Ellingson is eager to meet each of you. He and all staff members will continue working diligently to provide you with the same caring, calm and meticulous dental care you would expect to receive from Dr. Spanel.

As we continue to move forward in 2024 with this transition, we thank you for your trust, partnership, and patience as we welcome Dr. Ellingson to the practice. We have additional team members, and have updated our software programs to comply with HIPAA regulations of paperless charting. We are also updating our equipment to provide state-of-the-art care.

We all know that changes bring challenges. Please know that Dr. Spanel, Dr. Ellingson and the team at Regency Dental intend to provide you, our loyal patients, the very best dental care in a warm and compassionate atmosphere. If you haven’t scheduled your 2024 dental check-ups, please call us!
