Look After Your Child’s Baby Teeth

Baby teeth. They’re just going to grow back right?

So it hardly matters if you look after them as much as adult teeth? This is a somewhat understandable point of view, and pediatric dentists know it is one that a number of parents might hold. Unfortunately though, it also happens to be completely incorrect: and it’s actually really important to look after these teeth, regardless of whether they will be sticking around for long!

Why It’s Important to Look After Your Child’s Baby Teeth?

Infection

One of the most important reasons pediatric dentists omaha say to look after baby teeth, is that failure to do so can lead to an infection. If you don’t look after your child’s oral hygiene, then an infection can affect the root of the tooth and the gums, and this can actually be dangerous to their general health. That infection could permanently destroy the gums or the nerves, and can cause a high fever. The infection may even spread to other parts of the body.

Discomfort

Another reason to look after your child’s baby teeth, is that failure to do so can lead to the loss of teeth and a lot of discomfort. Whether or not they would have lost that tooth anyway, you won’t want them to get a cavity and have to have the tooth removed by an Omaha pediatric dentist! Likewise, you don’t want them to experience pain every time they bite down on their food.

Development

And this is another consideration: if your child gets a tooth or gum infection, or if their tooth decays, then they will find it harder to eat. That can actually have numerous repercussions for their general development – causing slow weight gain, and even changing the structure of the mouth, jaw, and face.

For all these reasons, you should begin a good hygiene routine for the very first teeth, all the way to the very last!
